Wherefore Art Thou, Alumni?

I’m sure that most of you know that the above question is an adaptation of a line from Shakespeare’s balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet (Act 2, Scene 2: “O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet”). But I’ll bet that a lot of you didn’t know that “wherefore” in this context means “why” and not “where” (i.e., Juliet isn’t asking where Romeo is geographically, but, rather, why he’s a Montague, a member of the family that her family, the Capulets, is at war with).

Having said that, the point of this article is to ask our alumni (or anyone interested) where they are! If you’d like to receive our Geography Newsletter, we need your mailing address. And, as for why you are whatever you are, we’d also enjoy any news you’d care to share!

Geography News is mailed out in the spring and fall each year. The newsletter is printed on 30% post-consumer paper with soy based inks. It features major departmental events and kudos, it thanks our recent donors for their generosity, and it includes news from and about our alumni. Our current mailing list has the addresses of about 2000 alumni and friends of the Department; if you’d like to be on it, please contact the Editor, Bill Norrington, at billn@geog.ucsb.edu.
