Description
The Department of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary lecturers to teach course(s) in The Department of Geography for upcoming openings during Summer Session B, Fall 2020 and Winter 2021. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from quarter to quarter, depending on the needs of the department. Positions and
percentage times may vary. The salary is based on UC’s salary scales and dependent upon qualifications. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship.
Main duties include teaching upper-division and lower-division courses. The candidate should be interested and experienced in teaching in lab and lecturer-oriented classes.
Basic qualifications: Two years of teaching experience in any area of Geography and all requirements for the PhD except for dissertation to be completed at time of application.
Additional qualifications: PhD in Geography or related field (required at the time of appointment). Summer 2020 session B begins on August 3, 2020.
Preferred qualifications: Experience teaching in one or more areas of physical or human geography or geographic information science.

Summary: The Climate Hazards Center (https://chc.ucsb.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Barbara seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher for an exciting project supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the US Geological Survey. The project focuses on using remote sensing and machine learning to predict agricultural statistics (crop production, crop yields, prices) in food insecure countries and will directly support the famine early warning efforts of USAID’s Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET). The project will have a strong focus on applications and will leverage cutting edge science to support lives and livelihood saving early warning information.
Qualifications:
Applicants must have completed all requirements for a PhD Degree in Statistics, Geography/Remote Sensing, Agricultural Economics, Agronomy, hydrology, environmental science, Earth Science or a related discipline except the dissertation at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications:
PhD awarded by the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong expertise in handling, processing and visualizing large geophysical or remote sensing datasets, and/or socioeconomic time series.
Ability to implement predictive models (including but not limited to machine learning algorithms) based on remotely sensed and/or time series datasets.
Fluency in programming languages such as R or Python.
Demonstrated ability to make reproducible code for cleaning, integrating, and modeling spatial/temporal data from multiple sources, spatial scales, and temporal frequencies.
Interest and experience in applied sciences
Proven record of independently leading research projects, conducting reproducible research, publishing journal articles and presenting at international and national conferences.
The initial appointment will be for one (1) year with a possible two (2) year reappointment based on performance during the year 1 and available funding.
Anticipated start date is July 1, 2020.

A top-ranked geography program nationally, the department is comprised of 26 faculty, 8 active emeriti faculty including National Academy of Sciences members Waldo Tobler and Michael Goodchild, 20 researchers, 125 graduate students, and 12 staff. They investigate a broad range of human, social and physical geographic topics on regional to global scales using methods including mathematical, theoretical and stochastic analyses, conceptual, statistical and dynamical numerical models, and field experimentation. Primary research areas aside of GIScience include: terrestrial, ocean, atmospheric and climate, population and public health, urban and regional, cognitive and behavioral. Complementing the department’s GIScience and GIS group are faculty specializing in remote sensing and numerical modeling.
