The Geography Department has sponsored a 4 x 6 foot space at I Madonnari this year that will feature a chalk reproduction of Susanna Baumgart’s photo “Mission Bells in the Water Lilies.”
The event takes place May 28-30 in front of the Santa Barbara Mission. To quote the I Madonnari website, “On Memorial Day weekend, the plaza of the Old Mission will be transformed with 200 colorful, large-scale street paintings created by 400 artists and young people. The artists (madonnari) begin working on Saturday morning of the Memorial Day weekend and continue drawing throughout the three-day festival or until their street paintings are completed. Santa Barbara’s I Madonnari, the first street painting festival in North America, was started in 1987 by Executive Director Kathy Koury as a fundraiser for the Children’s Creative Project.” The event attracts thousands of visitors, and the department name will be featured at the top of our artistic endeavor—another reason why it’s important to do a good job. If you or yours would be willing to help out with the project, please put your name on the signup sheet in the office. We’ll keep you posted on the logistics. Thanks in advance.
