Staff Assistant Jennifer Dean Bowen is adept at her job as the receptionist and Ocean Physics Lab liaison officer for the department—but she’s also a virtuoso when it comes to music. Jennifer studied the piano with Edward Francis (1990-1992) and Paul Berkowitz and graduated summa cum laude from UCSB with a Bachelor of Music (Piano Performance) in 1996. As an undergraduate, she won the UCSB Early Music Award, was voted Outstanding Graduating Senior by the music department faculty, and received scholarships from the Leni FeBland Foundation, the Bernice Bernard Foundation, the Santa Barbara Music Club, and the Santa Barbara Music Affiliates. Jennifer went on to obtain her Master of Music in Harpsichord Performance at the University of Michigan in 1998, where she studied with Edward Parmentier.
As a harpsichordist, Jennifer has performed Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo with UCSB’s Cappella Cordina and Musica Antiqua and Handel’s Semele with the Michigan Student Opera Works. She is also a founding member of Conversation Galante (Princeton, NJ) and the Underground Baroque Ensemble (Ann Arbor, MI); has played solo and given collaborative recitals across the U.S. and in Rio de Janeiro, and teaches keyboard and musicianship skills at the Children’s Music Academy in Ventura where she currently has over 30 students.
Jennifer’s upcoming concerts include collaborative recitals with Edgar Ernesto Ramirez, tenor, May 15 and July 17. The May concert will be held at 3pm at High Street Theatre in Moorpark. Tickets are $20 general and $15 seniors and students with ID. For more information, call 805-644-2805. The July concert location is TBA, but will be FREE—contact Geography Reception for more info.
