USGS names new computing cluster after Prof. Goodchild

The Center of Excellence for Geospatial Information Science, a recently established center within the US Geological Survey, has named its new Beowulf computing cluster after Professor Mike Goodchild to acknowledge his coining of the term geographic information science in a 1992 paper. The center (http://cegis.usgs.gov/) is headquartered in Rolla, MO, and was established in 2006 “to conduct, lead, and influence the research and innovative solutions required by the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) and the emerging GeoSpatial Web.” Prof. Goodchild described the naming as “very exciting and a great honor.”
