Read our latest Student Spotlight in Mary Toomey’s own words:

I’ve always had a passion for the earth sciences, especially oceanography and meteorology. My interest in Geography started with taking Geog 20, Geography of Surfing (best class ever!). I started taking more Geography classes after that and was very drawn to the interdisciplinary nature of the major. It felt like the courses touched on topics that were applicable to many facets of the world today. Now I am a Physical Geography major and I couldn’t be happier!

My favorite part of UCSB so far has to be the ocean! I love to surf, sail, and just be around the water. As a member of UCSB’s Sailing Team, I get to be on the water 3-4 days a week and sail regattas at different schools all over the country.

Given this love of the ocean, I am stoked to be taking Geog 104, Physical Geography of the World’s Oceans, this fall. I’m excited to learn all about how our beloved big blue thrives. While career days are far ahead of me, I know whatever I decide to do, it’s going to be centered around the sea!
