Earth Gate is the new internet entry point for everyone interested in the goings-on in Earth-Related Science at UCSB. It highlights the variety, high quality and interdisciplinary nature of our programs and research by presenting abundant links to specific projects and laboratories.
The site’s approach is a new one in that the articles and presentations of research are accessible by topic (Atmosphere, Human Impact, Oceans, Wildlife, etc.) rather than by department or organizational acronym, eliminating a lot of the mystery of what is going on where in UCSB Science. Until now, if you wanted to see what UCSB has to offer in terms of studying the oceans, for instance you might go check out Marine Sciences, but you might never see the vital ocean research happening in Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology, Environmental Studies, the Bren School and Geography’s Ocean Physics Laboratory. The College of Letters and Science has supported the creation of Earth Gate in order to make the whole of the University’s Earth Science resources easier to find on the internet.
In addition to these articles, Earth Gate provides weekly news on the environment in the form of a clickable map linked to articles provided by the Earth Week News Service, and announcements from UCSB’s Office of Public Affairs. There’s also a page dedicated to a Featured Lab and another listing and linking to our Departments and Organized Research Units. Check it out!
