Spatial Pattern Analysis Workshop

spatial@ucsb and the Center for Spatially Integrated Social Science (CSISS) hosted a week-long workshop on “Spatial Pattern Analysis” in July 2008. The workshop was funded through a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support a training program for population and health researchers to enhance their research applications of advanced spatial analytical methods. CSISS is the UCSB partner on a five-year NIH award to the Population Research Institute at The Pennsylvania State University. Drs. Stephen Matthews (PSU) and Don Janelle (USCSB) are co-PIs for the program.
Two dozen researchers from universities across the country took part in the workshop to learn about advanced spatial approaches for investigating such concerns as the spread of diseases (e.g., AIDS, cancer, chagas), spatial dimensions of fertility in the developing world, immigrant settlement patterns, spatial strategies for combating urban crime, and links between the design of built environments and obesity.

The program’s tentative plans for future summer workshops at UCSB include:

  • 2009—Instructors Katherine White and Paul Voss (both from the University of Wisconsin) on Spatial Regression;

  • 2010—Instructors A. Stewart Fotheringham and Martin Charlton (both from the National University of Ireland) and Chris Brunsdon (University of Leicester) on Geographically Weighted Regression; and

  • 2011—Instructors Kelvyn Jones (University of Bristol) and S. V. Subramanian (Harvard University) on Multi-level Spatial Modeling.
