Recent Geography Faculty Promotions

Several UCSB faculty members of the Department of Geography have received well-deserved promotions, effective 7/1/2012. Leila Carvalho and Joseph McFadden were promoted to the rank of Associate Professor, which includes tenure, and Phaedon Kyriakidis and David Lopez-Carr were promoted to the rank of Full Professor.

Associate Professor Leila Carvalho focuses on regional and large-scale climate variability and modeling, global climate change, and scaling processes in geophysics. Leila heads Geography’s Climate Variations and Change research group (CLIVAC) which is dedicated to furthering understanding of the Earth’s present and future climates on different temporal and spatial scales by developing observational and modeling analyses in atmospheric sciences.

Associate Professor McFadden’s research is focused on land-atmosphere interactions and the urban environment. He regularly teaches Geog 115A – Earth from Above, Geog 200A – Introduction to Geography Research, a new upper-division course on the Urban Biophysical Environment (next offered Winter 2013), and a graduate seminar in Vegetation Ecology.

Professor Phaedon Kyriakidis’ research interests include geostatistics and spatial analysis, stochastic environmental modeling, and scale issues in spatial data integration. Phaedon teaches Geog 172 – Intermediate Geographical Data Analysis, Geog 274 – Introduction to Geographical Data Analysis, and Geog. 276C – Topics in Geographical Data Analysis: Geostatistical Data Analysis; he also teaches Geog 210C (Analytical Methods in Geography III) on a regular basis, and, occasionally, Geog 210B (Analytical Methods in Geography II).

Professor David Lopez-Carr directs Geography’s Human-Environment Dynamics Lab and holds affiliate positions in three UCSB interdisciplinary programs: Global and International Studies, Latin American and Iberian Studies, and Marine Studies, as well as being a research associate with the University of California Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies and the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies. Lopez-Carr also is a steering committee member of the University of California’s Center of Expertise on Migration and Health (COEMH) and is the UCSB Broom Center for Demography’s Area Director for Population and Environment.

Congratulations to all from all of the Department!
