Mike Goodchild Receives Honorary Degree

At the summer 2001 degree ceremonies, Mike Goodchild received an honorary doctorate from Keele University in England. This award is in recognition of his long association with and support for UK GI scientists and his position as one of the founders and major intellectual figures in GI science. Keele University geographers said they found it difficult to imagine where GIS would be without Mike’s presence at its centre.

Timed to coincide with Mike’s trip to Keele to receive the degree, the Meeting on Fundamental Questions in GIScience is being organised in his honour. The purpose of the meeting is to focus on one of Mike’s principal scientific interests: the fundamental nature of geographic information.
