Meet Geography’s New Research Computing Assistant

“Hi – my name’s Bryan Karaffa, and I’m the new CNT/IT guy working with Dylan, Guylene, and some of the research groups in the department. I’ll be 25 in August and am a recent GIS graduate (Winter 2012). I grew up in Irvine and moved to Santa Barbara in 2006 after visiting a friend who was attending SBCC. Originally I was a Computer Science major at SBCC working to transfer to UCSB, but through an old roommate, I stumbled upon Geography / GIS and immediately changed majors before transferring to UCSB. I have a passion for all things outdoors especially camping, hiking, mountain biking, offroading, and snowboarding. Most recently, I’ve been involved in web-mapping and playing with real time data as well as improving the interactive campus map. I’m really looking forward to working with everybody in the Geography Department and want to thank everybody for giving me such a warm welcome!”
