Loaiciga Receives Julian Hinds Award

Professor Hugo Loaiciga has been selected by the Water Resources Planning and Management Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers as the recipient of the 2008 Julian Hinds Award. The award was endowed in 1974 by John R. Kiely, F.ASCE, in recognition of the outstanding professional contributions of Julian Hinds, Hon.M.ASCE, and is made annually to either the author of a paper judged to be the best in the field of water resources development in the previous year, or to an individual “for notable performance, long years of distinguished service, or specific actions that have served to advance engineering in the field of planning, development, and management of water resources” room/honors/honors_details.cfm?hdlid=29). ASCE represents more than 133,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide, and it is America’s oldest national engineering society. Hugo’s award is a major tribute from the ASCE, as well as yet another example of why our Department is a leader in its field–congrats and kudos to Hugo!

Professor Loaiciga received a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Costa Rica and an MS and PhD in Water Resources and Hydrology from the University of California, Davis. His research interests include planning, design, and analysis of water resources systems; and theory and computational aspects of surface and ground water hydrology. Hugo served as the Water Commissioner for the City of Santa Barbara for six years, he joined the UCSB Department of Geography in 1988, and he was elected as a Fellow of the ASCE in 2007.
