Karl Grossner Wins Dual Fellowships

Karl Grossner was recently awarded the departmental Jack & Laura Dangermond Graduate Fellowship and a UCSB Graduate Opportunity Fellowship. The Dangermond Graduate Fellowship is awarded annually to a promising graduate in geographic information science in the department of Geography. The recipient will hold the title “The Jack and Laura Dangermond Fellow” in residence and receives a $5,000 stipend, allowing its holder to devote more time to imaginative and creative research. Karl’s UCSB Graduate Opportunity Fellowship is a 1-year award, for which the Graduate Division provides a stipend of $16,000 and payment of fees and health insurance for all awardees.

Karl is a fourth year PhD candidate whose adviser is Professor Goodchild. According to Karl’s web site, he’s “developing a theoretical foundation for extending geographic information system (GIS) data models to meet the particular requirements of historical scholarship and learning. For me, theory and practice are inseparable, so I’m building one—an historical GIS that is—capable of supporting a new class of digital historical atlas. My dissertation is tentatively titled ‘A Semantic Data Model for Representing Human History in Geographic Information Systems.’ I am also an experienced designer/developer of web software and instructional material, with extensive professional experience in several aspects of computing, including databases, graphical communication and networks.”

Karl is “a fan of visualizations of all kinds: cartographic maps, schematic diagrams, concept maps, etc.” He’s also what is known as a “mature student” (the editor promised not to refer to him as a “senior student”). Whatever you call him, first salute him for his accomplishments!
