Indy Hurt Wins Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award

Graduate student Indy Hurt has been awarded the UCSB Academic Senate’s Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award for 2008-2009. The Academic Senate Graduate Council’s Committee on Distinguished Teaching Awards is charged with recognizing and enhancing teaching on this campus. Only four Teaching Assistants in diverse disciplines are recognized for their excellence in teaching each year.

To quote the UCSB web site, “teaching assistants play a vital role enhancing the teaching mission of the University. The Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards recognize the contributions of graduate students to the teaching and learning process of UC Santa Barbara. This awards program was initiated to encourage and reward excellence in teaching on the Santa Barbara campus. Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award recipients receive a cash award and a framed certificate.”

Dr. Tamara Afifi, Chair of the Committee on Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards, congratulated Indy by stating, “We were extremely impressed with the quality of your nomination, and it is with great pleasure that we honor you for your fine teaching. Please accept our congratulations and admiration for the very high level of your contributions to your students, your department, and to UCSB.” Indy becomes the fourth Geography graduate student to ever win this award, the others being Nathan Gale (1981-1982), Jeff Hemphill (2001-2002), and Sarah Battersby (2004-2005). One wonders what happened between 1982 and 2002!

The Academic Senate will honor Indy’s achievement at a reception prior to the Faculty Legislature meeting on April 23 at 3:00 pm, during which time she will receive her award and have her picture taken with Chancellor Yang. “The recognition is fantastic, not only for myself, but for our entire department,” Indy remarked. Hey, Indy, you’re fantastic as well—congratulations from all of us!
