History of Geography Department Display

Check out the display case on the third floor of Ellison, north wing, west end of the hall. In it is a poster and artifacts representing the history of the Geography Department. The poster was prepared for the 100th Anniversary of the American Association of Geographers (AAG). It will be displayed at the annual meeting next month, which will be in Pennsylvania. Then the poster will return to the display case — we celebrate our thirtieth anniversary this year, so it is especially appropriate to have an historical display!

The history timeline on the poster spans from the beginning of the University of California, through the days of the “Geography Program” in the 1960s and early seventies, when Geography finally became a major, and through the last 30 years to today. The items below the poster include tools that were used before computers and a few representatives of early computers.
