Hallie Eakin: New Assistant Professor


Dr. Hallie Eakin has accepted a position as Assistant Professor, specializing in Hazards and Society in the Department of Geography. Dr. Eakin received her doctoral degree in Geography and Regional Development in 2002 from the University of Arizona with a dissertation entitled “Rural households’ vulnerability and adaptation to climatic variability and institutional change: Three cases from Central Mexico.” As a postdoctoral researcher in the Center of Atmospheric Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City, she has continued to work on issues related to economic globalization, agricultural change, and rural vulnerability to climate in the context of several comparative international projects involving case studies in Mexico,Argentina, Guatemala, and Honduras.

Dr. Eakin has also worked as a consultant to the World Bank, the United States Agency for International Development, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency on various projects related to agricultural development, the use of seasonal forecasting in drought risk mitigation, and adaptation to anticipated climate change impacts on urban water availability.

Hallie will officially begin her appointment November 1, 2005. In her acceptance notice to the Chair, she wrote: “I wanted you to know that I am quite pleased to accept the offer and very excited about coming to Santa Barbara.”Welcome aboard, Hallie!
