Grad Students Treat Geography to a Spring Barbecue


Following the Department’s recent 40th anniversary events, the graduate students of Geography decided to put on a spring barbeque at Goleta Beach, to give everyone a much-needed end of quarter break. This event was open to all geographers, folks from related departments and programs, and all of their families, friends, and pets. We informally counted a record number of dogs this year, including the geographer-pup Altas, faithful companion of student Sarah Shivers.

Event organizers Daniel Ervin, Grant McKenzie, and Crystal Bae arrived early with the drinks, tablecloths, and other party-making supplies while “Mystery Chef” Dan Montello fired up the grill for tri-tip, chicken, and portobello mushrooms. More people soon arrived with potluck dishes in hand, covering the picnic tables with a colorful spread of appetizers, sides, and desserts.

The air was abuzz with good conversation, and everyone appreciated the chance to chat with friends and colleagues old and new. The gorgeous oceanside setting even inspired Kate Voss to take a dip in the chilly Pacific, as others roasted marshmallows and the rest of the gathered crowd polished off all of the food and drink.
