Geotrans Students in the Limelight at Annual TRB Meeting

Professor Kostas Goulias recently returned from the 88th Annual Transportation Research Board Meeting in Washington DC, January 11-15, and sent the editor the following summary, along with the comment “I am extremely proud of our students who got their work accepted for presentation and publication in the CD ROM proceedings”:

Once again Geotrans, our transportation in geography laboratory, showed its strength at the Annual Transportation Research Board meeting with research presentations and awards. Seo Youn Yoon gave a presentation on her dissertation research with the title “Impact of Individual Accessibility on Travel Behavior and its Propagation through Intra-household Interaction” at a special session of PhD dissertations. She was also honored for her Eisenhower fellowship and had a poster presentation with the title “A California Statewide Exploratory Analysis Correlating Land Use Density, Infrastructure Supply and Travel Behavior” from research recently completed for Caltrans with Kostas Goulias and Tom Golob from UC Irvine. Kate Deutsch, who finished her masters in December 2008, presented her research findings in a poster with the title “Investigating the Impact of Sense of Place on Travel Behavior Using an Intercept Survey Methodology.” Kriste Henson, who received one of the most coveted Eisenhower fellowships, presented her work in a special session for fellows with the title “Travel Determinants and Multi-scale Transferability of National Activity Patterns for Synthetic Populations.” Dr. Shaunna Burbidge, one of our recent Ph.D. graduates and now an assistant professor at BYU, had two presentations with Kostas Goulias from her dissertation on “Active Travel Behavior” and “Evaluating Impact of Neighborhood Trail Development on Active Travel Behavior and Overall Physical Activity Among Suburban Residents,” as well as a very popular paper with the title “Incorporating Public Health in Long-Range Transportation Planning: Implementing Research in Policy.” Dr. João de Abreu e Silva, who was a Fulbright visiting fellow at UCSB from the Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal, also presented his work, with Kostas Goulias, with the title “ A Structural Equations Model of Land Use Patterns, Location Choice, and Travel Behavior in Seattle and Comparison with Lisbon.” Kostas Goulias, who has held a variety of leadership positions in TRB technical committees, research panels, and NRC committee activities, was also honored with an emeritus member election by the standing Committee on Traveler Behavior and Values.

Editor’s Note: GeoTrans is in its infancy – it was created in mid-2007 and found a physical location in early 2008 – but, as seen above, it has claimed some major accomplishments. For more, see The GeoTrans Laboratory web site.
