Geography Well-Represented at 2007 TRB

Graduate students Shaunna Burbidge and Kirk Goldsberry will be presented their Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowships from the US Department of Transportation at the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting, January 21-25 in Washington, DC. (see the write up of May 12, 2006 – “Geography Grads Land Double DOT Fellowships”). Initiated in 1992, the DDETF program awards fellowships to students pursuing degrees in disciplines related to transportation, and, to date, approximately 2000 fellowships have been granted. “The objectives of the overall Program are to attract the nation’s brightest minds to the field of transportation, to enhance the careers of transportation professionals by encouraging them to seek advanced degrees, and to retain top talent in the transportation industry of the United States” ).

The TRB Annual Meeting program covers all transportation modes, with more than 2,800 presentations in 500 sessions addressing topics of interest to all attendees—policy makers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives of government, industry, and academic institutions. The spotlight theme for 2007 is “Transportation Institutions, Finance, and Workforce: Meeting the Needs of the 21st Century” (http://www.trb.org/meeting/), and our Department is well represented. Professor Goulias will be presiding over Sessions on “Latest and Greatest in Activity and Time Use Analysis,” “Moving Activity-Based Approaches To Practice Task Force,” and “Progress in Microsimulation and Synthetic Population Generation”; Geography Department Consultant Val Noronha will preside over a Poster Session on “Spatial Data Integration and Map Matching” and a Spatial Research Subcommittee on “Data and Information Systems”; and both Shaunna Burbidge and Professor Goulias also will be presenting papers.
