On Saturday, March 4th, 2017, UCSB student organizations Los Ingenieros, National Society of Black Engineers, and Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science, along with UCSB departments MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement), and Office of Education Partnerships hosted the action-packed, all-day Science & Technology MESA Day at UCSB for about 500 pre-college, underrepresented, first-generation college-bound students. This exciting annual event was designed to expose junior high and high schoolers to math, science, and engineering in a fun and accessible way. Jasmine Arpagian, Sari Blakeley, and Susan Meerdink hosted a table over the lunchtime to introduce potential college students to our Geography Department. Qinghua Ding provided posters and books to decorate the table and educate students about circulation patterns and cryosphere. At the table, students received Geography Department pencils and Geography undergraduate brochures when they finished putting together puzzles of aerial images that covered the UCSB Campus and Santa Barbara Pier. “It was entertaining to interact with students, find out what they experienced during the MESA event, and share Geography with potential college students”, commented Susan Meerdink.
