Geography Grad Student an Outstanding TA

Jeff Hemphill, graduate student in Geography, was chosen for an Academic Senate Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. Jeff receives a certificate, $1000, and will be honored at a ceremony the Academic Senate holds for distinguished teaching and outstanding teaching assistants. The ceremony is scheduled June 6, from 3:30 to 5:00 pm, at the Faculty Club.

Four awards for TAs were given this year from a pool of 33 candidates. The awardees were selected by a subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Effective Teaching and Instructional Support, which consists of members of that committee and past awardees. Nominations can come from anyone on campus. Jeff was the first Geographer to get an Academic Senate teaching award since Nathan Gal in 1982!

The photo is of Andy Ballantine, a Geography and Bren School graduate student and the Graduate Students Association Representative to the election committee, congratulating Jeff during Colloquium, May 16, 2002. Meryl Wieder, Geography’s MSO, took the photo. Although blurry from low light and fast movement, the image captures the spirit of celebration those of us who know Jeff feel in the acknowledgement of his excellent contribution to undergraduate education in our Department.
