Geography Awareness Week

Since 1987, the National Geographic Society (NGS) has sponsored Geography Awareness Week to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations, with a focus on the education of children. Celebrated every 3rd week in November, National Geography Awareness Week was signed into law on July 24, 1987 by President Ronald Reagan. As awareness increases of the interrelatedness of all life and substance on the planet, the need for geographically astute stewards of Earth becomes more and more apparent.

This year, several members of the Department gave presentations about geography to area schools, reaching approximately 250 students. Presentation topics included the geography of Santa Barbara County, the basics of remote sensing, clouds and global warming, maps and map-reading, and weather and seasons in Santa Barbara.
