Geog 3 Lecturer Sundbeck Honored at SBCC

Carl Sundbeck, professor of Earth Science at Santa Barbara City College and lecturer of Geography 3 classes for UCSB, was selected by his City College peers to be the college’s 24th Annual Faculty Lecturer. The honor is considered the highest awarded to a SBCC faculty member each year. Sundbeck presented his lecture, “A Brief History of a Few Smart Scientists,” on Wednesday, March 26, at the Garvin Theatre on SBCC’s West Campus.

A 1976 graduate of Cornell University with a bachelor’s of science degree in Science Education, Sundbeck received masters’ degrees in both education and geography from UCSB. In 1980 Sundbeck became a full-time teacher at Santa Barbara City College. He served as chair of the earth and planetary sciences department for nine years, science division chair for two years and has been the assistant golf coach for over 20 years. In 1995, he and fellow SBCC professor Al Flinck conducted a semester study abroad program in New Zealand. He has been lecturing for UCSB’s Geography Department nearly eight years – since the 1995/1996 school year. He has brought a number of students into the Department, interesting them in the subject matter with his lively lecturing style and voluntary offering of weekend field trips.
