Alumna Dawn Wright (Ph.D. in Physical Geography and Marine Geology, UCSB, Class of 1994) gave the Commencement speech for the College of Letters and Science’s Division of Mathematical, Life, and Physical Sciences last Saturday, June 16. Dawn is a Professor of Geosciences at Oregon State University, and she gave an inspiring talk covering lessons learned and some suggested rules to live by.
Professor Wright’s numerous awards include: Nominee, U.S. Professor of the Year (Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Council for the Advancement and Support of Education) (2007); NSF CAREER award (1995-’98); Fulbright to Ireland (2004); Milton Harris Award for Excellence in Basic Research, OSU College of Science (2005); Raymond C. Smith Distinguished Alumni Award, UCSB (2007); Oregon Assembly for Black Affairs Education Award (2006); Excellence in Mentoring, OSU College of Oceanic & Atmospheric Sciences (1998, 2001); and Woman of the Year in Education, Clarity magazine (1999).
