The Department of Geography is pleased to announce that the joint winners of The David S. Simonett Memorial Fellowship for 2001/02 are Karen Holmes and John Rogan. Congratulations! The fellowship stipend will be split between the two winners. Honorary mentions go to: Doug Fischer, Jordan Hastings, Martin Herold, and Matt Rice.
The faculty sub-committee was especially impressed by the applications, and selection of the winners was not easy. Criteria used were the length of time at UCSB, student service to the department, academic progress, academic accomplishment, the application letter, and the quality of the “best work” submissions.
David S. Simonett was Chair of the Department of Geography at UCSB from 1974 until 1980, and the Dean of the Graduate Division from 1980 until 1989. He was a major founder and shaper of the graduate program in Geography and a key member of the NCGIA when it was founded in 1988. He also helped establish the joint SDSU/UCSB PhD program in Geography.
After his death in 1990, the award was established in his name. Donations have been accumulating, and the award will be given every other year into the future. The recipient will be the student chosen who best exemplifies the values that David Simonett established for the graduate program at UCSB.
