Can You Name These Vagabonds?

The first attached photo, courtesy of Professor Rick Church, was evidently taken around 1985 after a UCSB Geography Department softball event. Rick (2nd from right, back row) is certain about identifying his wife Carla (2nd from left, back row) and his two children (Karen, 1st left, middle row, and Steven, far right, middle row), he thinks he can ID Waldo Tobler (far left, back row), as well as David Stoms and Frank Davis (to Rick’s right, respectively), but he wouldn’t bet his life on most of the others.

The second photo is more mysterious, insofar as date and location are less certain (1980s, Santa Ynez grad student apartments?). Those in the know are fairly certain that Reg Golledge, Rick Church, and Terry Smith are 4th, 5th, and 6th from the left in the back row; that Waldo Tobler is 1st left, middle row; that David Simonett is 2nd, left, front row; and that Jack Estes is far right, front row. If any of you senior alumni/Friends of Geography can ID any of the other vagabonds, the Department would appreciate it, especially since the two photos will go into the Historic Photos archive on our web site. Indeed, any anecdotes about the people and times captured in these shots would also be welcome, so please pass anything you care to share to the editor.
