Jordan T. Hastings (PhD 2009) is a computational geographer, a moniker which spans computer algorithms, database management, geographic information systems, scientific modeling, cartography and visualization. He also is an experienced project manager, having led numerous database and GIS/mapping activities for government and industry sponsors. His current research focuses on gazetteers, geological maps, and data stewardship in the geosciences generally (source).
Now starting his fourth year at the University of Southern California, Spatial Sciences Institute, Jordan has been promoted to Assistant Professor of the Practice of Spatial Sciences. He has been instrumental in developing three foundational courses for the Institute: 582 – Spatial Data and Databases, 589 – Cartography and Visualization, and 594a – Master’s Thesis Preparation. Jordan has supervised six Masters theses and has nine more in process. As research takes on increasing importance for the Institute, Jordan is innovating a GIS Techniques Development Laboratory, focused on hazards.
Jordan also remains active in digital geologic map standards with the U.S. Geological Survey and in gazetteer/semantics research on his own. As the former Nevada State Cartographer (Ret.), Jordan continues to live in Reno, Nevada; he teaches online for USC (source: personal correspondence).
