Alumni in the News: Paul Sutton

Remember Paul Sutton? Currently an Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Denver, Paul was a graduate student at UCSB from 1992 to 1999. He received an MA in Geography in 1995, an MA in Statistics in 1997, and a PhD in Geography in 1999, and his dissertation, Census from Heaven: Estimation of Human Population Parameters using Nighttime Satellite Imagery, reflects his continued interest in the dynamics of human-environment relations. Paul was recently featured in the June 13, 2005 edition of High Country News (“the paper for people who care about the West”–vol. 37, No. 11, available with free trial subscription at www.hcn.org) in an article about “exurbian” sprawl. Titled How Dense Can We Be?, the feature article points out that “living the good life in the ‘exurbs’is draining our tax coffers and devouring the West’s open spaces, but large-lot development continues to explode.” To hear Paul explain his concerns about unbridled rural population expansion, listen to his CNN interview re exurbia (with Paula Zahn, requires Quicktime).
