All the Best to You and Yours for the New Year!

The UCSB Department of Geography is shutting down as of December 16 and will be back in business on January 4, 2010. While much of the downtime is due to “furloughs” necessitated by budget cuts, the fact is that we might as well apply them to days we would normally like to take as “vacation time.”

Of course, there will be a lot of last minute panic, and, of course, opening day on January 4 will be pure chaos. But, in between, we hope to re-group, recover, and re-vitalize. Hey, it’s called the Christmas Break, and, no matter what your religious affiliation, it’s still a break.

Despite the fact that the Department is having financial difficulties, geographers know how to chart new territory. Staff arranged a private, end of year party; faculty opened their homes for year end celebrations; and grad students—well, suffice it to say that they know how to have a good time!

All the above is a round-about way of thanking you for your interest and commitment to Geography, your input and feedback to the Department, and your shared concern about the need for support for our educational mission.

Waes Hael (be in health), UCSB Geography
