Affiliated Professor of Geography Awarded NSF CAREER Award

The UCSB Office of Public Affairs announced yesterday that Assistant Professor Peter Alagona (History and Environmental Studies; Geography Affiliated faculty member) has received a prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER award for research on the University of California’s Natural Reserve System and the role of biological field stations in American environmental history. Dr. Alagona is one of four UCSB Assistant Professors to receive the award this year, the others being Rouslan Krechetnikov (Mechanical Engineering), Javier Read de Alaniz (Chemistry), and Luke Theogarajan (Electrical and Computer Engineering). “Every year the NSF makes five-year CAREER awards to some of the best and brightest researchers in the country early in their academic career,” said Michael Witherell, UCSB’s vice chancellor for research. “It gives the recipients a chance to concentrate more on doing great research and less on writing proposals. We are pleased that, once again, assistant professors from UCSB had such great success in this very competitive program.”

According to the NSF, “the Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations. Such activities should build a firm foundation for a lifetime of leadership in integrating education and research. NSF encourages submission of CAREER proposals from junior faculty members at all CAREER-eligible organizations and especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, and persons with disabilities to apply.”

For more about Dr. Alagona, see the June 20 Department News article. Assistant Professor Peter Alagona became an Affiliated Faculty member of the Department of Geography in June. Affiliated faculty members participate in instructional activities, including serving on MA and PhD committees, but they are salaried by other departments or institutions. The Department of Geography currently has 11 Affiliated Faculty, 23 Permanent Faculty, 2 Adjunct Faculty, and 3 Emeritus Faculty members.
