Bo Yan won first place among five finalists in the Geographic Information Science and Systems Specialty Group (GISS) annual student paper competition. Bo Yan won first place with his work, where he integrates a core component of traditional geographic information technology, geocoding (as well as service), with Linked Data to derive geographic knowledge in addition to merely returning coordinates. His paper demonstrates the power of this approach by building a geographic knowledge map interface and showcases some of the key improvements compared to typical web map applications. Congratulations to Professor Alan Murray, who won the Distinguished Scholar Award with the Regional Development and Planning Specialty Group at the American Association of Geographers this year. This award is generally given annually to a scholar who has made significant and sustained contributions to the applied or theoretical understanding of development, planning and policy issues.

Professor David Lopez-Carr won the Research Excellence Award for the Association of American Geographers Population Specialty Group. This award recognizes early and mid-career scholars for research excellence in Population Geography. The Population Specialty Group held a special panel session on Population and Environment, and Lopez-Carr was recognized by the specialty group for his contributions to population and environment.
