A Warm Welcome to Jordan Hastings


Alumnus Jordan Hastings, an accomplished practitioner, manager, and educator, has a diverse background of academic and public-sector experiences in management of geographic/scientific data, and he will be working at the Center for Spatial Studies as Assistant Project Scientist from August to December 2015. Jordan received his PhD in Geography in 2009 while simultaneously employed as the Chief Cartographer and GIS Manager for the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology in Reno, Nevada. Following that, he was appointed as Assistant Professor of the Practice of Spatial Sciences at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Hastings’ academic work focuses on gazetteers, geological maps, hydrography, and management of data in the geosciences. The unifying theme of his career is geocomputation, spanning computer algorithms, database management, geographic information systems, scientific modeling, cartography, and visualization. Jordan received a BS in Mathematics from the University of San Francisco in 1970, an MS in Computer Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1974, an MS in Geography from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1998, and his PhD in Geography from UCSB in 2009.
