The recent plethora of professional posters on our office corridor walls have drawn a lot of attention (and not just because of the difficulty of getting them to stick to our newly painted walls!), and grad student Josh Bader provides the following explanation of their origin:
The posters featured in the first floor hallway of Ellison are the result of a quarter’s worth of group work in Geography 176C, GIS Design and Applications. Among the requirements of the project were a proposal, a presentation, a final document, and the posters. The students worked in groups of 3-5 on the projects. Many of the topics were provided to the students from a list organized by Dr. Goodchild, but a few were student-generated. Additionally, most groups had a point-of-contact that was particularly interested in the topic that acted as a consultant and/or data provider. In all cases, though, the methodology was developed by the groups. Most of the project work was completed during lab time overseen by the two TAs: myself and Sean Benison. However, I think most groups spent extra hours outside of class finishing the work. The topics and analysis techniques utilized were wide-ranging. Personally, I was very impressed with results the students were able to produce in just 10 weeks. For more information, please visit the GIS Design and Applications Posters page.
