In a note to the Department, our Chair Keith Clarke announced: “I am delighted to confirm that Dr. Martin Raubal, of the Institute for Geoinformatics at the University of Munster, Germany, has formally accepted our offer of a faculty position as Assistant Professor. He will be joining us at UCSB starting January 2007 and replaces Dr. Sara Fabrikant. This is my sixth and now last hire as Department Chair. I wish Oliver Chadwick and the search committee now being formed for our 2007-8 hire best wishes for continued success in bringing to UCSB the world’s very best.”
Dr. Raubal earned a M.S. in Spatial Information Science and Engineering from the University of Maine (1997) and a Dipl.-Ing. in Surveying Engineering from the Vienna University of Technology (1998). He received his Ph.D. (Honors) from the Vienna University of Technology in 2001 with a thesis on agent-based simulation of human wayfinding. His research interests are in semantic interoperability, action-based ontologies, spatial cognition, location based services, formal cognitive models of human activities, and agent-based modeling. He has authored or co-authored over 34 refereed articles in journals, books, and conference proceedings relating to GIS, computer science, and cognitive science, and he is also the author or co-author of 5 books. Martin was an invited participant at the NCGIA Specialist Meeting on Spatial Webs at UCSB in 2004, and in 2005 he won the Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions Award for the most innovative research paper at the Association of Geographic Information Laboratories for Europe (AGILE) Annual Meeting. Impressive, indeed, and we certainly welcome him aboard!
